Weezer - Buddy Holly

Effect on Audience: The music video for Weezers 'Buddy Holly' can appeal to three main audiences. From an active audience point of view they may be watching the video and linking the references back to the 'Happy Days' TV series which was shown in the 70's; they would then identify that it is a music video for the band Weezer as oppose to a passive audience would initially think that the video was a TV show. The director Spike Jones has cleverly accumulated three main audience groups via the use of narrative and representation on screen.

The effect on the fans of the band will be entertained by the performance and can relate to the band members. Looking at Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, the highest level the audience would reach, would be safety. This is because they get security from the band as they are representing familiar characters from a 70's sitcoms. These characters are created to resemble everyday people, and the audience may not understand that the music video is based upon 'Happy Days' but relate to the characters.

The second audience which will be effected by this music video are those who are fans of the show this can be either recent fans or most likely original fans of Happy Days from when it was first aired in the 1970's they are likely to achieve higher on the hierarchy of needs such as respect from others and a sense of achievement since they understand the references which have been made in the music video, such as featuring the cast from Happy Days as well as the location from the sitcom. Those who have not watched the show may not get theses references and therefore will be grateful and interested (i.e. give respect to others) in those who know about the show.
Finally fans of the 50's style (the original time setting of the show) will be impacted on by the video as they will recognise the era as well as thinking that it is 'cool', they will be interested to see how this time of the 1950's is being represented. It might give them a sense of nostalgia. These people will be high on the hierarchy of needs however those who are both fans of the 50's and of Happy Days (maybe also followers of the band); these people will reach right to the top of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs finding morality and creativity in what they see, they will get all of the intertextuality that has been referenced.

  1. Great mash-up of audience theory and the idea of intertextuality. Some pretty precise ideas going on.
